North Branch Trail Less Taxing Bike Ride
While the weather could have been a little nicer the ride was a comfortable trek along the north branch trail. The temperature wasn’t much of a deterrent to being out of doors as we shared the path with the scores of walkers, joggers and skaters. We even saw a party carting the various needs for a cookout across the lawn to one of the rebuilt shelters in the forest preserve. We decided to plunge right in and chose to head south which means that we tackled the daunting uphill (I know as hills go this is not such a monster, but we are talking Illinois bikers here.) of the Oakton Street overpass at the very beginning of the ride. After exhausting the possibilities of the southern reaches to the trail we returned and continued north where the abundance for urban fauna, i.e. deer, were spotted grazing in the meadows and woodlands. After our return to our host’s abode, Rich cranked up the grill and we feasted on chicken breasts and sausage as well as the tasty dishes that we riders contributed. Thanks to Rich for opening his home to the club and hosting this edition of the Schussers Bicycle Adventures. |
Saturday June 23rd
Mark the date and don’t plan on walking in after the feature starts as I don’t want my popcorn spilt as you have to squeeze by to get to the seats in the center of the row. If you want and aisle seat you have to get to the theater early. Actually, if my memory serves me right, at the Haack Cinema it was the couch seats that went first and then the dining room chairs followed by the patio furniture then the floor. We’re not sure of the theme for this edition of Movie Night, but are open to suggestions. Just make sure to mark your calendar for Saturday June 23rd for this screening of one of Hollywood’s greatest spectacles in the intimate and friendly confines of the Haack home theater.

UTAH Snow, Snow, Snow
We skied Park City the first day and managed to find the face of the mountain that was sheltered from the wind that buffeted us as we rode the first two lifts. We also skied at Solitude, Deer Valley and the Canyons. We all, yes even me and the other Ron too, took a day off. While it didn’t look to bad outside when we got up that morning, the snowing and blowing had gotten so bad by the time we would have left that we couldn’t see to street across the parking lot next to the condo. Solitude was the group’s unanimous choice for the day we went there as the morning snow report said they had gotten 23” of fresh powder over night. That was more of an enticement than this powder starved group of flatlanders could resist. The Deer Valley day featured clear, but crisp weather and the impeccable conditions that they are famous for. The Canyons and their abundant terrain offers lots of trails to explore, but you need to remember, and I can speak from personal experience here, to pay attention to what you are doing while getting on the chair or you can end up in the wrong stop with the chair making contact with your anatomy unexpectedly and in an inappropriate location.
The trip back to Chi town was by and large uneventful. We even had extra time to reminisce as it took United over an hour to get the luggage from the plane to the carousal |

Well another page has been ripped off the old calendar and the warm weather edition of the club’s agenda is in full swing. We were privileged to have Terry visiting from Texas at the April meeting, but unfortunately it was mostly a love for attending the Cubs opening day festivities that brought her back to Chicago rather than a desire to see me in action as meeting leader extraordinaire. Well I would venture a guess that we were a close second, or maybe third, behind Chicago weather, on her list of reasons to make the great trek north We had the less taxing bike ride and managed to cover close to 15 miles. The rider of the only bike with a working odometer forgot to reset it at the start of the ride. So the mileage quoted above might have been rounded up to a degree. The after ride eats were up to the usual high standard of tastiness and overly abundant supply. The weather was cool but comfortable and we did again witness the fact that the deer population is very successfully adapting to life in an urban environment. Hopefully by the ride later this month we will have stretched our pedaling capabilities somewhat so we can enjoy more of the beautiful scenery that is along the Fox River Trail. Plan on coming out and joining us on Sunday afternoon, May 20th in the parking lot of the Grand Victoria Casino at 2:00PM as we visit a path we didn’t ride at all last year. |
For June we are planning a return of an old favorite, Movie Night. It was last June that we gathered and viewed a pair of the Oscar nominated films. The date for this years edition is June 23rd at that cinematic palace otherwise known as the Haack Residence. We are looking into the possibility of doing a Door County camping trip. Since July the Fourth is a Wednesday this year it looks to be out of the running, but the weekends of July 20-22 or August 10-12 are being thought about. We would schedule to stay an extra day by including the Friday before so we would have three days to enjoy this slice of Cheddarhead Heaven. Why we would even be there in time for the Friday night fish fries. While the board, such as it is, (Dave’s replacement has still to step forward.) are scheduling an activity a month, I am sorry to report that attendance has been on the meager side at most of these events, as well as at the meeting’s. ( I still don’t know where the rest of you are getting your monthly Hackney Burger fix, but I have become almost addicted over the years that we have been meeting there.) So give some serious, no I mean lighthearted let’s have a good time, thought to coming out for some of the club’s events.

Schussers Ski Club is a social club serving the greater Chicago area. We've been skiing together since 1962, and have a diverse membership of singles and couples ranging from 21 to 70 years old. We are a year round club and have many non-skiing activities including cycling, camping, canoeing, rollerbladeing, golf, dinners, and many more outings. Our Members skiing abilities range from rank beginners, to headwall crashing experts. Our motto is "We Ski Together" and we take this seriously. Whatever level of skier you happen to be, you will always find a friendly group of people to enjoy the slopes with.
